Northside Hospital is improving outcomes for patients with severe emphysema through endobronchial valve placement, an innovative, minimally invasive treatment. The procedure has been available at Northside Hospital Atlanta and Northside Hospital Cherokee and is newly available at Northside Hospital Gwinnett.

Endobronchial valve placement has shown promising results in helping patients breathe easier and improve their quality of life.

“At Northside Gwinnett, our interventional pulmonary team offers valve procedures that can significantly improve breathing and reduce shortness of breath for patients with severe COPD,” said Dr. Prasad Garimella, an interventional pulmonologist who oversees the Lung Nodule Clinic at Northside Hospital Gwinnett. “These therapies can help patients feel more comfortable in their daily lives and avoid major surgery.”

Endobronchial valves are placed in targeted areas of the lung during a bronchoscopic procedure. By blocking airflow to the most damaged portions of the lung, the valves redirect air to healthier areas, reducing hyperinflation, improving lung function and easing symptoms such as shortness of breath.

“Using one-way endobronchial valves can significantly improve breathing in carefully selected patients with severe emphysema,” said Dr. Jose Antony Paul, interventional pulmonologist at Northside Hospital Cherokee. “By allowing controlled deflation of the most diseased areas of the lung, healthier lung tissue can work more effectively, leading to improvements in daily activities and overall quality of life. Many patients experience meaningful improvements in shortness of breath, daily activities and overall quality of life, and some are even able to reduce their dependence on supplemental oxygen.”

“Our commitment is to deliver these advanced options with compassion and personalized care, ensuring every patient feels supported and hopeful throughout their journey,” Dr. Garimella added.

Northside continues to invest in advanced pulmonary technology and highly trained providers. Across the hospital system, Northside offers diagnostic and therapeutic lung procedures, including robotic bronchoscopy, photodynamic therapy and endobronchial valve placement.

These tools expand access to effective, minimally invasive treatment options and reaffirm Northside’s commitment to high-quality lung care across Georgia.
