Prostate cancer: Personalized care for every patient

man at doctor

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, affecting individuals in deeply personal ways. A diagnosis can bring feelings, including uncertainty and worry. Patients now have access to treatments and resources, thanks to new advancements in imaging, testing and a multidisciplinary approach, that can be tailored to their personalized needs and understanding of prostate cancer.

At Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, the care model revolves around collaboration. Weekly tumor board meetings bring together a multidisciplinary team of medical oncologists, urologists, radiologists and pathologists to discuss complex cases and treatment options. This integrated approach goes beyond the team treatment and includes prostate cancer navigators and survivorship resources.

Advances in diagnoses and treatments

In the past, prostate cancer treatments were limited to prostate removal or radiation. Today, there is a better understanding of how tumors behave, paving the way for greater personalized care. Genetic testing, prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography (PSMA PET) scans and other advanced diagnostic tools, allow doctors to assess each patient’s individual biology. These complement other factors like age, race, and cancer aggression to help assess the risk of cancer progression.

The American Cancer Society has noted that Black men are at higher risk of prostate cancer and face higher prostate cancer mortality. This startling data, combined with an alarming trend (across many types of cancers), shows younger patients are being diagnosed more often, early diagnosis and screenings can be lifesaving.

Diagnosis and PLUVICTO — a targeted radioligand therapy that at-risk men should start screening at age 40-45, that delivers targeted radiation to prostate cancer cells, minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissue — offers new hope for late-stage prostate cancer. Focal therapies, such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and cryoablation, provide less invasive options for early stage cancers. These therapies reduce urinary and sexual dysfunction.

Guiding patients through the journey

Beyond medical treatment, Northside prioritizes patient-centered care through its dedicated prostate cancer care nurse navigation team. With over 10 referral pathways, nurse navigators guide patients from diagnosis to post-treatment recovery. They help explain the complexities of prostate cancer, aid in appropriate referrals and provide other resources.

Navigators also include liaisons, who address the practical and emotional challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis. A non-clinical liaison can help patients manage non-medical hurdles, including arranging transportation, dealing with work interruptions, or even finding care for pets during treatment. The team empowers patients to stay proactive in their care, providing feedback and a safe space to discuss issues. These benefits include day-to-day considerations and familial support.

Advice for patients

For men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer and their loved ones, because this cancer is so widespread for men, many have been through it. There is a community of support available. Pick a doctor you trust, because once you do, they’ll make sure you are taken care of.

Prostate cancer is a journey that no patient should face alone. Patients can navigate their personalized treatment with confidence and thrive with the right care team.
